We’ve seen the future – it’s driverless and features components manufactured by Wrights Plastics!
Wrights Plastics have supplied a crucial component for futuristic pods, manufactured by world famous Westfield Cars. In their first project for the UK car manufacturer, we developed and made the crucial upper glazing panels that are used at the front & rear of the pod.
It’s another project in our long history of component supply to the automotive sector and currently supply to leading brands such as Jaguar Land Rover and The Morgan Motor Company. Like Westfield Cars, Wrights Plastics remains a family-owned business.
Trails of the pods took place earlier in Greenwich, London in April 2017. Cameras and lasers helped navigate a two-mile riverside path near London’s O2 Arena, in order to tackle problems on the road such as pedestrians and cyclists. The vehicle, which travels up to 10mph (16.1kmph), will be controlled by a computer. The shuttle seats four people and has no steering wheel or brake pedal.
The success of the trial helped the Dudley-based sports car manufacturer land a £30m contract to supply driverless pods to South Korea, a deal heralded as one of the first of its kind.
We have manufactured the four upper glazing panels that are seen on the front and rear of the autonomous vehicle. Drape moulding 6mm clear acrylic, we have manufactured a number of complete sets for the pods which were trailed in Greenwich, London in April 2017.
